About Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. Its steep walls enclose grassland, swamps, a soda lake and acacia forest, and an estimated 25,000 large animals live on the crater floor.

It is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino, along with lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo. Maasai herders still live in the wider conservation area, which also includes Olduvai Gorge.

Good to know

  • Game drives on the crater floor are limited to set hours, so we start early
  • It can be cold on the rim at night, so bring a warm layer
  • Great wildlife viewing all year round
  • Easy to combine with Tarangire, Lake Manyara or the Serengeti
