About Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the classic African safari. Its open grasslands, rocky kopjes and riverine woodland hold one of the largest concentrations of wildlife on earth, including lion, leopard, cheetah and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra.

Every year around 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move in a great circle through the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. Where they are depends on the month, so our guides plan your route and camp to put you close to the action.

Good to know

  • Central Serengeti (Seronera) has great game all year
  • Calving season in Ndutu and the southern plains runs roughly January–March
  • River crossings at the Mara River are usually July–October
  • Hot-air balloon flights at sunrise can be added

Highlights

Big cat country

Seronera and the kopjes are among the best places in Africa to see lion, leopard and cheetah.

Balloon safaris

Float over the plains at sunrise, then enjoy a bush breakfast on landing.

Fly-in options

Short flights from Arusha or Zanzibar save long drives and leave more time on game drives.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in the Serengeti?

We recommend at least two nights inside the park. Three or four nights let you explore more than one area and follow the migration properly.

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

January to March for calving in the south, June–July for the western corridor, and July to October for the Mara River crossings in the north.

Can I combine the Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes. Ngorongoro is on the road between Arusha and the Serengeti, so most of our Serengeti safaris include a crater game drive.
