6-Day Ndutu Calving Season Safari - Serengeti Wildlife Safaris

6-Day Ndutu Calving Season Safari

6 Days 5 Nights

Overview

Experience one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife events on this 6-day Ndutu Calving Season Safari, timed to coincide with the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Southern Serengeti. During the peak season, the Ndutu plains become a vast nursery as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth, attracting large numbers of lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators. Peak calving is generally around mid-January to February, although timing varies with rainfall.  The safari combines Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Ndutu/Southern Serengeti plains, with two full days dedicated to Ndutu. This gives you more time to witness newborn wildebeest calves, huge migration herds, predator hunts, zebra, gazelles and spectacular photographic opportunities. From the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire to the extraordinary concentration of wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater and the dramatic Ndutu calving grounds, this itinerary is carefully designed for travelers who want to experience the Great Migration at its most intimate and dramatic stage.

Itinerary

Your safari begins in the morning with a drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park, famous for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and wildlife-rich Tarangire River. Enjoy a full-day game drive searching for elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelopes and numerous bird species. The park's dramatic baobab-studded landscape provides an excellent introduction to northern Tanzania. In the late afternoon, drive to your accommodation for dinner and overnight. Highlights: Tarangire River • Elephant herds • Baobab trees • Lions • Giraffes • Zebras • Wildlife photography

Accommodation: High View Lodge.
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, descend into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive. The crater floor is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, offering opportunities to see lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, hyena and, with luck, the endangered black rhino. After lunch, ascend from the crater and continue toward Ndutu, entering the heart of the Southern Serengeti ecosystem. As you approach Ndutu, the landscape changes to vast green short-grass plains. During calving season, enormous wildebeest and zebra herds gather here because the nutrient-rich grass provides ideal conditions for raising newborn calves. (tanzaniatourism.com) Enjoy an afternoon game drive around Lake Ndutu and the surrounding plains before reaching camp.

Accommodation: Olmorijo Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is one of the most important days of your safari. Wake before sunrise for an early morning game drive across the Ndutu calving plains. During the peak season, thousands of wildebeest calves can be born each day, creating one of Africa's most remarkable wildlife spectacles. (ug.tzembassy.go.tz) Spend the entire day exploring the plains around Lake Ndutu, Lake Masek, Hidden Valley and the surrounding woodland and grasslands, depending on current wildlife movements. Your experienced safari guide will look for:  Newborn wildebeest calves, huge zebra and wildebeest herds, lions following the migrating herds, cheetahs hunting vulnerable calves, spotted hyenas, leopards in woodland areas, Thomson's gazelles and other antelopes. Migratory and resident birdlife: Ndutu is particularly valuable during calving because much of the area lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where appropriate off-road wildlife viewing can provide greater flexibility for following wildlife action. (Saleh Safaris) Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your game drive until late afternoon. Return to camp for dinner and an unforgettable night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Accommodation: Olmorijo Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Another full day is dedicated entirely to Ndutu and the Great Migration. Having two complete days in the area gives you a much better chance of experiencing the unpredictable nature of calving season. Rather than rushing between destinations, you can follow current wildlife movements and spend more time at exceptional sightings. The main focus today is the dramatic predator-prey interaction created by the abundance of newborn animals. Look for lion prides stalking the herds, cheetahs using the open plains for high-speed hunts, hyenas patrolling the edges of the migration and jackals searching for vulnerable young animals. You may also encounter elephants, giraffes, ostriches, wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and numerous other species. For photographers, this is an exceptional day because the green plains, newborn calves, predators and soft seasonal light create outstanding wildlife photography opportunities. Return to camp in the evening.

Accommodation: Olmorijo Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive through Ndutu as you gradually begin moving toward the central Serengeti. Continue through the vast Serengeti plains, stopping whenever wildlife activity provides an opportunity. The Serengeti is famous for its enormous landscapes and abundant wildlife, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. The day combines a scenic game-drive transfer with wildlife viewing, allowing you to experience how the landscape changes as you move northward. Arrive at your central Serengeti accommodation in the late afternoon, enjoy dinner and relax beneath the African night sky.

Accommodation: Nakupenda Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake early for your final Serengeti game drive. This is your last opportunity to enjoy the incredible wildlife of the Serengeti before beginning the journey back toward Arusha. After the game drive, enjoy lunch and begin your return journey. Depending on your flight schedule, you can be dropped at Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or another agreed location. Safari ends with unforgettable memories of the Ndutu calving season and the Great Migration.
