This 5-day biking trek offers a rare and thrilling chance to cycle on the slopes of Africa’s highest peak. The Kilema Route allows mountain bike access. In addition, you may be able to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the roof of Africa.

First, the route passes through rainforest and moorland. Then it crosses the alpine desert and enters the arctic zone near the summit. Along the way, you face steep climbs and high-altitude terrain. Finally, you enjoy epic downhill rides on your descent.

Itinerary

  • Time: 5–6 hours

First, we pick you up from your hotel in Moshi and transfer you to Kilema Gate (1,950m). There, you complete registration and attend a pre-climb briefing.

Then you begin your ride through the lush montane forest, passing waterfalls, wildlife and scenic views. Later, the path becomes steeper as you approach Horombo Hut, your stop for the night. You can ride most of this day’s trail, although you may need to push in some steep spots.

  • Elevation Gain: ~600 m
  • Time: 2–3 hours

Today is an acclimatization day, because your body needs time to prepare for high-altitude biking. After breakfast, you take a short ride to Mawenzi Viewpoint. From here, you enjoy dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding alpine landscape.

Then you return to Horombo for lunch. Afterwards, you relax in the afternoon and prepare for the climb to Kibo the next day.

  • Elevation Gain: ~1,000 m
  • Time: 5–6 hours

Today, you ride across the alpine desert zone, a harsh but stunning part of the trail. The terrain is rough and rocky while you cross the vast saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Still, you can cycle most of this trail with effort.

When you reach Kibo Hut, you rest and hydrate. Then you prepare your gear for an early summit attempt the next day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Distance: ~19 km round trip
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,195 m up, then descent
  • Time: 10–14 hours

Around midnight, you begin the summit push, riding, pushing or carrying your bike as needed. At first, the trail from Kibo to Gilman’s Point is steep and demanding. However, from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, you may be able to ride short sections, depending on the weather and trail conditions.

After enjoying sunrise from Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, you start your descent to Horombo Hut. You can ride most of the way down, so the descent is an exhilarating downhill experience.

First, enjoy a final downhill ride through the moorland and forest zones to Kilema Gate. Meanwhile, your guides handle the check-out procedures.

Once they finish, you transfer back to Moshi. Finally, you can enjoy a hot shower and a well-deserved celebration of your incredible achievement.
