Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). It rises inside Arusha National Park. For this reason, it is an excellent choice if you want an adventurous trek before attempting the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 4-day climb is manageable yet rewarding. Along the way, you enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, wildlife and the majestic Kilimanjaro in the distance. In addition, you climb with Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company, so you benefit from expert guidance, comfort and the chance to see the diversity of Tanzania’s natural beauty.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. First, you meet your professional guides from Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company. Then you take a short drive to the Momella Gate, about 45 minutes from Arusha, and complete the registration procedures.

After that, your hike to Miriakamba Hut begins. The trail leads through lush forests full of rich vegetation. You may also see wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes and various bird species. The first day’s climb is moderate and takes about 4 to 5 hours.

Finally, you reach Miriakamba Hut, where you spend the night. It is an ideal spot to acclimatize. Meanwhile, you enjoy a warm dinner and prepare for the next day’s climb.

After a hearty breakfast, you continue your climb towards Saddle Hut. This higher camp sits between Mount Meru’s two craters. The trek takes around 4 to 5 hours on a gradual ascent. Along the way, you enjoy incredible views of Meru’s crater, the surrounding valleys and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

As you climb higher, the environment changes. The dense forest opens up to alpine meadows and rugged terrain. Also, keep an eye out for wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various birds.

Later, at Saddle Hut, you take in the stunning views. The hut is also the perfect place to acclimatize. After dinner, you rest well before the summit attempt at midnight.

This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. You begin your summit attempt in the early hours, around 12:00 AM, so that you reach the top by sunrise. The ascent to the peak takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

During the climb, you follow rocky paths, dense forest and ridgelines with dramatic views of the craters. Then, at the summit, a spectacular panorama opens up. It stretches across the Serengeti Plains, the Ngorongoro Crater and the distant Kilimanjaro.

After some time at the top, you descend to Saddle Hut for a quick rest. Next, you continue further down to Miriakamba Hut for the night. In total, the round trip takes around 10 to 12 hours of trekking.

On the final day, you enjoy a relaxed descent back to Momella Gate. The hike is easier and takes around 2 to 3 hours. The route passes through lush forest, where you might spot buffalo, antelopes and a variety of bird species.

At the gate, you complete the exit formalities. Then your driver from Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company takes you back to Arusha. Afterwards, you can enjoy the rest of the day at leisure and look back on your climb. After all, you have just conquered Mount Meru, an achievement that will stay with you forever.
