Frequent Asked Question

When is the best time to book a 4-day Great Migration safari?

The Great Wildebeest Migration takes place throughout the year, with different regions of the Serengeti offering different wildlife experiences.

  • January–March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, with newborn wildebeest and increased predator activity.
  • April–June: The herds generally move through the southern and central Serengeti towards the western corridor.
  • July–October: The Northern Serengeti offers opportunities to witness the famous Mara River crossings.
  • November–December: The herds commonly move towards the eastern and southern plains.

These are general seasonal patterns, and actual wildlife movements depend on rainfall, grazing conditions and other natural factors. Your itinerary will be planned around your travel dates and the latest information about the herds.

Is four days enough to experience the Great Migration?

Yes. Four days offer a rewarding introduction to Tanzania's wildlife, with two days dedicated to exploring the Serengeti and a final game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. Wildlife sightings depend on seasonal movements and local conditions. Travellers who want more time following the migration can extend their safari.

Can I see the Mara River crossings on this safari?

The Mara River crossings are most commonly associated with the Northern Serengeti between approximately July and October. However, their timing depends on the herds, weather and river conditions, so crossings cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will use local knowledge to identify suitable viewing areas and maximise your chances.

What should I pack for this safari?

Bring lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing, a warm jacket for early mornings and evenings, comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are recommended for wildlife viewing. A soft-sided duffel bag is preferable to a large hard-shell suitcase because space in safari vehicles is limited.
