Overview

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). Located in Arusha National Park, it provides an excellent opportunity for climbers looking for an adventurous trek before attempting the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro. The 4-day climb is a manageable yet rewarding adventure, showcasing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, wildlife, and the majestic Kilimanjaro in the distance. As part of a guided experience with Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company, trekkers will enjoy expert guidance, comfort, and the chance to witness the diversity of Tanzania’s natural beauty.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha, where you’ll meet your professional guides from Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company. After a short drive to the Momella Gate (about 45 minutes from Arusha), you will complete the necessary registration procedures. From here, your journey to Miriakamba Hut begins, with a scenic hike through lush forests filled with rich vegetation and the occasional wildlife sightings, such as buffalo, giraffes, and various bird species. The first day's climb is moderate, taking about 4 to 5 hours to reach the Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll spend the night. This is an ideal spot to acclimatize and enjoy a warm dinner while preparing for the next day's climb.

After a hearty breakfast, you will continue your climb towards Saddle Hut, a higher camp nestled between Mount Meru’s two craters. This day’s trek will take around 4 to 5 hours, with a gradual ascent that provides incredible views of Meru's crater, the surrounding valleys, and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. As you ascend, the environment changes, and the dense forest opens up to more alpine meadows and rugged terrain. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife like colobus monkeys and various birds. At Saddle Hut, you’ll enjoy the stunning vistas, the perfect location for acclimatization, and a restful night before tackling the summit in the midnight.

This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. You’ll begin your summit attempt in the early hours, starting around 12:00 AM to ensure you reach the summit by sunrise. The ascent to the Peak (the summit of Mount Meru) will take approximately 6 to 7 hours. As you climb, you will navigate rocky paths, dense forest, and ridgelines, offering dramatic views of the craters. Upon reaching the summit, the panoramic view is nothing short of spectacular stretching across the Serengeti Plains, Ngorongoro Crater, and the distant Kilimanjaro. After spending some time at the summit, you will begin your descent to Saddle Hut for a quick rest, and then continue further down to Miriakamba Hut for the night. The total round trip will take around 10 to 12 hours of trekking.

On the final day, you’ll enjoy a relaxed descent back to Momella Gate. The hike back is easier and will take around 2 to 3 hours. The route is through lush forest areas, where you might spot animals like buffalo, antelopes, and a variety of bird species. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll complete the exit formalities, and your driver from Serengeti Wildlife Safaris Company will be waiting to take you back to Arusha. You’ll reflect on your memorable climb and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure, knowing you’ve just conquered Mount Meru an achievement that will stay with you forever.
