Day 3: 7-day Machame Route – Shira Cave to Barranco Camp

This is a critical acclimatization day. You’ll ascend to the Lava Tower (a volcanic rock formation at 4,630m), which offers a valuable opportunity to adapt to high altitude. From there, you descend gradually to Barranco Camp, which lies at a lower elevation to encourage better acclimatization – a "climb high, sleep low" strategy.
Located at the base of the impressive Barranco Wall, the campsite offers magnificent views of the mountain. You’ll rest here in preparation for tomorrow’s climb.

  • Elevation: 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,976m

Day 4: 7-day Machame Route – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin your day by scrambling up the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling section that rewards you with panoramic views. The trail then continues through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, situated above the Karanga Valley.
This is the last water point on the mountain before the summit, so we refill here. The shorter hiking hours allow more time to rest, enhancing your preparation for the high-altitude push ahead.

After an early dinner, you will rest for a few hours before beginning your summit push around midnight. Proper hydration and sleep are essential at this altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

The best climbing months are January-March and June-October when weather conditions are most favorable. July-September is peak season with clearer skies but more trekkers. We operate climbs year-round except during the heavy rains in April and November.

The 7-day Machame is considered challenging but achievable for most fit individuals. The extra day (compared to the 6-day option) significantly improves acclimatization. Summit day is strenuous (11-15 hours hiking), but our guides pace the climb carefully and monitor everyone's health.

Our 7-day Machame Route has an 85-90% success rate thanks to our careful acclimatization schedule, experienced guides, and high-quality equipment. This is significantly higher than the average Kilimanjaro success rate of about 65%.

We recommend 2-3 months of regular cardio exercise (hiking, running, cycling) and strength training, especially for legs and core. Ideally, you should be comfortable hiking 5-7 hours with a daypack and able to climb 1,000m elevation gain. We'll provide a detailed training guide after booking.
